More 80's freshness

I recently discovered a whole stash of my 80's BMX magazines.
Theres so much good stuff in there that inspired me as a kid and probably still does today I had to share it.
We start in 1984, but by late 86 / 87 some real developments in style and fashion are going on, and some hands on graphic experimentation via the xerox machine...
Enjoy.

These designs are heavily influenced by 80's Detroit Techno,
Acid house, JG Ballard & the 80's TV series "The Equalizer".

Art of Paris series 3

These 3 jpegs are what originally kickstarted the Art of Paris in 2009.
This was the first time I took elements of my oil paintings / landscapes and placed them alongside my digital work and graffiti influences.
I was fascinated by the results , the interplay between clean graphics and brush strokes.
This has been a deciding factor in the style of my work this year so far.

Gems from the 80's

Before graffiti I used to bmx, these guys had some of the best street wear & adverts out there.
Still a big inspiration today.

Inspirations

During my years as a graffiti artist my influences
came from many different sources.

A big one was tv and films of the late 80's, these
still play a big part in my work today.
This beauty (and the trailer that follows) were a classic.

Usually the only graffiti you'd ever see on prime time tv.

I've recently re-visited this logo, and now with typestyles
evolving on from spraypaint have given it a new twist.

I'll publish the finished graphic soon

Art of Paris series 1

Fresh out the box for 2010, the "Art of Paris" is a comprehensive
look at all my work to date.

Bringing together pieces of typography, art & graffiti in new ways,
often rarely seen before.

I'm attempting to play on the dynamics that can be created by
overlaying groupings of work. By doing this its helped me no end
in re-evaluating all that I do.

The images here are a mixture of tailored graphics first produced
for WSSK between 2004-2009, some of my own photography, and
a couple of large vehicles painted more recently.

Theres also a canvass from 1998, based loosely on camouflage, it plays
with an anagram of paris...and spirals across the piece.

Next installment coming soon...

Winter Hiatus & (Chinese) New Year

Its been quite a while since my last post, too
long in fact...
In my time off though, I've been hard at work,
searching out visual treats both old and new to
share in the Pop Stop.

Starting tommorow there will be a new series of posts
titled the "Art of Paris".
This is a broad look at the current direction I'm
heading with my painting, art & typography.

Something like this has recently appeared
on my flickr.

The work on this blog however, will feature extra dialogue
& back ground knowledge.

I'll also intersperse with these some other little gems
I've found along the way.

Stay tuned for more, much more x
